My students at work are currently desperately struggling to beat the Wily stages of Mega Man 8. The first Wily stage includes a protracted jet sled segment that I think is interesting but distracts from the core of the game. The PlayStation 1 era Mega Man games suffered from this sort of focus on spectacle and I think they are worse for it. I consider auto running stages in Mega Man games to be filler, so while I adore Frost Man's music and atmosphere and thought the first jet sled section was a neat little break, I also never go back and beat Mega Man 8 as often as say, Mega Man X3 or any random other Mega Man title. Mega Man X4 similarly had Jet Stingray's stage, which took place entirely on autoscrolling Ride chaser segments - If I were working on such a game for myself, I'd omit stages like that entirely, or at least massively downplay that element. I think Mega Man X2's Overdrive Ostrich had a better implementation of the Ride Chaser, since getting on it and keeping it was the stage's extra little challenge rather than having to learn to play this completely separate game mode for single stages. I can understand why those stages are in there, though, since they seem to probably be a cost/time effective way to pad out the games and still have the excitement the developers wanted the player to feel.
