another background. still trying to figure out how to bring out details without having a blurry mess. I think I should switch to kirta so I can try different brushes

this is a really nice base, I would suggest starting with a 50% gray background to start working on, and yeah try the brushes with Krita, they have some great defining brushes for more prominent lines.
also perhaps try and find out where your light source is coming in, and start highlighting and shadowing yr subjects accordingly, that can really help give it defined mass.
