Not Really Heroes is a single or two player board game in which one player controls the hero and the other controls the map.

The main idea behind Not Really Heroes is that the hero player is almost entirely useless and must navigate his or her way through the level trying to avoid fighting as much as possible.

On the other hand we have the 'levelmaster' who can influence the map in-order to assist the hero in their quest. The levelmaster utilizes cards earned through the heroes actions such as defeating an enemy or opening a chest. (In the case of a single player they take both roles.)

At the beginning of the game all board tiles are placed face down at random but must be connected to one another, these board pieces are flipped to face up as the hero moves over them or through the use of cards by the levelmaster. The hero can only move one tile at a time unless influenced by the levelmaster in-order to move faster, after the hero has moved and during any resulting events of the revealed tiles the levelmaster can play a card. (One card per tile moved that turn)

Other than conflict generated by the board the players will have to contend with each other on which direction to head or actions to take as they are both working towards the same goal. There are several goals all of which can complete the game but ultimately pose their own challenge; defeat the boss to win instantly, free the princess and safely return her to the start point or gather a set amount of gold then escape with it all.
