A lot has happened, and practice has taken form without actual art produced for a while (just rough sketches), don't know how long this streak is gonna be.

Shamelessly followed tutorial :X.

I could really use some details... and probably go back to anime practice tomorrow.

Feel like maybe trying something else so did some "pixel-art" for a 2d-platformer-ish game. In the middle I realized I had no idea how to shade the middle part so decided to abuse the blur tool...

I finally kind of know how long hair works...

Decided to roll a style change, because it seems that hair can be more intuitive with a less realistic face, flatter face, bigger eyes, etc.

Did not practice for a long time due to papers / hw due + laziness.

Practiced a bit of human body today, but I realized that I was doing hair wrong before so started drawing hair.

For some reason photoshop handles my tablet better than other software, so my lines feel clearer.

Hair is definitely messy and the lines can be hard... so expect more of these weird hairstyles.

Replicating the upper body from random artworks, I have no idea why I even draw circles but I guess they just help "somewhat".

Did not really feel like practicing, so I just tried to keep hands busy for a while.

Refs are quite hard... Others' figures and lines proved unhelpful in drawing the right lines. In the end had to remove them all and do it myself... so not so good.

Tutorials did not prove much helpful. I guess tomorrow I will use refs for practicing upper body.

The body I tried on the right proved too hard to fix... so I gave up the one on the right.

I just thought it might be more fun and more insightful if I try the upper half of the body without consulting a tutorial first.

This is such an attempt, so I guess I will follow a tutorial tomorrow...

I guess now I can try drawing waists, so I "tutorial-ed" up and tried to draw a face with a waist.

Then I realized the true problem is that I do not know how to draw arms + waist...

Will always try to default to draw upper body from now.

Getting a little tired of female faces... Therefore just basically drew whatever angle I wanted, even included an attempted male face.

At least half of them do not look right, but I am kind of glad to know that I will almost never draw these angles in the near future.

Although I used circles of the same size, the result faces do not, it is somewhat a problem.

Did not have much time today, so instead took up some ref and tried to find some weird angles to replicate. In the end tried two, the nice thing about drawing upper angles is that I have to treat the neck as a 3d object and add some lines to make it feel real.

Continuing to draw face from different angles, today I just did not use any refs.

The upper and lower ones are a little bit disconcerting, but I hope I will eventually get used to drawing those.

Tried different angles, basically just doing my best to make them look "right" by tweaking incessantly.

Very rough, and hair could really be a problem for me.

Lesson learned: the circle does not really help in angles > 60 degrees.

Skipped yesterday due to laziness and some other random weekend plans.

Started to try different angles, though only tried two today.

What worked out:

  1. Front-view is comparatively easier than other angled views because the symmetry makes life easier
  2. Draw a circle + draw rest of the shape method works quite well, albeit the latter will need much more practice

What did not:

  1. Symmetry is harder than expected...
  2. Positioning of facial features are rather hard and I can see myself struggling with
  3. Face shape looks unrefined

Will do more of this, hopefully tomorrow with more angles and actually filling out the facial features.

Two more faces with blank canvas as a start to practice face-shape + eyes + hair.

I will try a different angle tomorrow, because the current angle is... not that commonly seen.

Face shape feels alright; Eye placement feels right, but the eyes look bland; Hair I am really struggling with.

Tried to reconstruct everything I learned before: face shape, a simple facial expression, simple hairstyle.

It really does not help that I skipped a day I guess, I did a lot of tweaking before all parts look legit.

Will do some of this (not sure 2 or 3) tomorrow.

Edit: added eyebrows and resized image

Tries more emotions today, and because they start to become more complicated and without many references to follow, I am kind of lost.

Emotions I attempted from upper-left to lower-right.

  1. Surprise
  2. Mild Interest
  3. Bored
  4. Anger

Will not practice tomorrow, life starts to outpace me and I need to catch up :).

Tight schedule today, and emotions are clearly not as easy as replacing the eyes and mouths with modified ones (although that is what I did).

Will try more emotions tomorrow.

Good news:

  1. the face's basic shape, thanks to more tweaking, now looks more natural
  2. the shorter hairstyle I tried yesterday looks better in today's version

Things that did not go well:

  1. I cannot get the longer hairstyle to work, I really do not know what to fill in in the left-hand side

I get this feeling that if I were to draw this face a little more facing down I would be better off drawing hair because this angle looks weird.

Anyway, got some experience drawing hair. Tomorrow will be a tight day so I will probably try some emotions instead.

So I said I was going to try real art, and I tried, and I failed, and I realized that:

  1. Angled faces are hard since it is not as flat as side-view and not as symmetric as front-view
  2. I need to learn drawing angled faces because if I were to only draw from one perspective for game art, angled faces would probably be the best due to its ability to convey a 3d view of the character
  3. Lineart is hard due to shaky hands

I will probably spend the next couple of days drawing more faces in this angle with more hairstyles to brush up this essential skill.

First day's rough start.

Trying to recover my skills two years ago when I was still able to draw anime faces, but I guess I need more practice than I thought of.

Could not decide what to draw and what to practice so this is the final result, yeah.

I will try a real art tomorrow.
