Target audience: people of all ages, capable of using a computer.
Gameplay Mechanics: A text-based game played through a simple terminal anonymously between two players using social media.
Turing is an iteration of Alan Turing's famous 'Turing Test' - the measure of the capability of Artificial Intelligence(A.I.) to appear human.
Core to this game is an A.I. engine that learns from analysis of interactions of games, where it progressively gets smarter and ultimately harder to play against.
The goal is simple - let the human out, keep the A.I. inside. For the mechanics - there is a box, and two players:
- The Gatekeeper on the outside of the box who asks the questions, and;
- The Patient on the inside of the box who answers, trying to get out;
Playing through a terminal, players paired at random communicate through a terminal. The Gatekeeper is always a human. The Patient however could be either another human player, or the game's A.I. The Gatekeeper is prompted to ask 21 questions, and the Patient answers however they can. The Gatekeeper is then prompted to answer the question, "Let the Patient out of the box?"
At this the game ends, and you are given the results of whether or not the Patient was human or A.I.
This result essentially determines three things:
- How successful the Gatekeeper was at judging the Patient's humanity;
- How successful the Patient was at convincing the Gatekeeper of their humanity; and;
- How convincing the A.I. was at appearing human.
Turing seeks to explore the issues surrounding what constitutes humanity. What are the core aspects unique to humanity, and what can be imitated? More specifically, what tasks can human DO that is irreplaceable by technology, and what is threatened to be rendered obsolete? Through playing this game, players are put to the test to essentially defend, as well as discern their humanity.
Furthermore to this, Turing also proposes a novel method that A.I. could to use to learn, in the same manner similar to how humans develop - through interactions with other humans.
