Sole existence is a sandbox simulation game in which the player is in control of the shoes for a wide variety of different creatures, ranging from simple shoes of human make, high heels for giraffes, heavy boots for dragonflies to tiny wee klogs for centipedes and millipedes. The player has a workshop in which they can fashion shoes out of the materials available and the animal they choose. Shoes can be tracked and observed over their usable lifetime, and the way and style in which they break can be scrutinised down to the minuest of detail. The player unlocks blueprints for new types of shoes by creating particular shoes types for missions, or can simply focus on one design to make the most efficient and beautifully crafted shoe in many elegant styles. Modes of gameplay include a stitching simulator, and other types of various shoe construction related minigames. Players can post their shoe creations online, and in turn have their shoes voted on as the most beautiful shoes by the massive online community.
