just a lil loop, i wanted to make some brass trap. i listen to an amount of brass trap but every time i go to make it i have no idea what im doing. much more comfortable with these 3 instruments: piano, reese, hardwave lead. so i went to make brass trap and got this loop instead. nothing like brass trap but ok. serum 2 has a few reallllllly nice piano sample-based banks i like. serum 2 is fucking awesome. free download if you bought serum 1
listened to this too many times, added more details than usual. found it challenging making an intro and buildup for the drop, since the drop was just kind of piano and glockenspiel type instruments.
Drop Layers:
bass layers: reese, reverbed brass stab, slaphouse pluckbass (same midi for all 3)
melody layers: piano reverbed a bit, glockenspiel-type preset that already had reverb, some other reverby sustained lead preset (same midi for all 3 layers)
other: cymbal crash at start of each 8 bar section, some other reverbed+phased crash that does a repetitive 1/4note pattern at -32db (can barely hear it but it sort of maybe adds something), kick, no snare for some reason, string melody in second half of drop (returns from the intro), piano chords playing bassnote+octave above+fifth above
i like this one. i never have really tried to make short things in arrangement. it was a lot of fun though. a lot of eq automation, presets that already had a lot of distortion, volume automation and leveling.
Back making electronic music. Haven't made any arrangements in a while. I thought the first thing back might be cool, sometimes happens but nah this is just okay.
I like the presets and the combination of presets - I didn't make the presets though, so idk if its weird to be happy about. Another thing I liked was not all the melody notes are on gridlines, possibly caus ive been noodling on midi keyboard with a lot of mono presets lately.

the 808 has become a very specific instrument thats a cross between a kick and a bass. with a very specific set of harmonics. but a lot of variances across different 808s. dubstep producers should quit making crappy squelch noises and learn it so they can make youtube tutorials to teach me. i think a square wave is a solid starting point. id probably start there if i tried
the amount of work it would take for me to sound design the 808s i want. i dunno it should be possible with something like serum but i dont really know
ive never liked that aspect of working with wav 808s, they might always end 0.2 seconds before you want them to and then, what you have to loop some section of it. loop something thats slowly decreasing in volume and even pitch/timbre? nah i cbf
whereas i can find reese basses i can use. sustain indefinitely if theyre made in serum
i think for 808s id have to learn to synthesize them myself. not as easy as it sounds. its a specific combination of harmonics and volume envelope and pitch envelope to get it right. very hard to get right i think
i also get sick of 808s because its so hard to find good ones that sustain long enough. all the best-sounding 808s are shitty wavs that sound amazing but end too quickly. Echo Sound Works has an 808 for serum pack but its their only pack i dont like at all. 808s are a really specific sound and it seems very hard to get right
i like jamming on keyboard with a brass stab preset. but actually arranging a tune with brass stab and 808 and kick and snare is something i always fail at
if you do want to make brass trap. i recommend two of Echo Sound Works packs for brass stab sounds that are PHAT out of the box. Coda and Sphere. weirdly, these are supposed to be 'orchestral' type packs but they have the most solid brass stabs of any of their packs for some reason. id recommend trying to layer multiple of these stabs on top of each other and doing multiple octaves of different brass stabs i guess. i dunno, every time i try make brass trap i fail. its too percussive and complex for me i dunno how to get into it yet
lately ive also been editing out "always portamento" from presets. maybe some people like portamento. i come from playing piano where theres no such thing as portamento, i like to edit it out of presets most of the time
why did i have to do that? could i have left them as serum 1 presets? i cant remember. pretty sure i had to convert them all if i wanted to edit them at all. which i do, i like to always adjust volume levels of presets so when i select random presets the volume doesnt go all over the place
the only thing i dont like about serum 2 is i had to write an autohotkey script to convert all my serum 1 presets into serum 2 presets. for me i suppose this was no problem. so i actually dont dislike anything about serum 2
