using sliders, lists, and scrollable areas that unity provides probably (hopefully) not be something i keep forever, but it's a fine start to putting everything in the right place with the basic functionality.

i'll need a way to detach the mouse from changing the player's look angle so they can actually interact with the screen. realistically this should be the escape key, but this will probably result in weird behavior since the unity editor is already trying to handle pressing escape to unlock the cursor...
