the next Lague / Brackeys RPG video reminded me that a 1D blend tree makes idle / walking / running super intuitive. i hesitated to do something like this for a second because it feels like i lose control over how each specific state works, but i think this is easy enough to turn into a substate machine later if i absolutely need to. but it did mean remaking all of the transitions, which was annoying.
