An open-source game project which take the anime series, 'Shokugeki No Soma', written by Yūto Tsukuda and animated by JC Staff, and adapts it into an 8-bit 2-dimensional side-scrolling arcade game.

It takes the core concepts, themes, and nuances of the anime, and re-imagines them as how they might look if created for 3rd generation home video consoles (Nintendo NES, Sega Master System). Players take control of the main character, Yukihira Soma, a transfer student into the Totsuki Culinary Academy, where he sets out on his goal to be #1 chef by the time he graduates.

In glorious 8-bit fashion, he will use his culinary ability (translated to this game as running, jumping, attacking, and collecting in 2D) to defeat bosses & their minions, amass friendly allies, challenge rivals to battles, and clear every level. This game would faithfully follow the canon material of the manga - creating a nod to fans, who would understand the subtle cues and gameplay mechanisms and how they relate to the original.

Gameplay Mechanics: A single player side-scrolling 2D game, using two-button + directional controls.

Platform: 3rd Generation Consoles(Nintendo NES, Sega Master System); or ported to be played on a PC/Mac.

Target Audience: All ages. G-rated family game (Note: The original series involves subtle themes of girls being stripped naked by food. But considering this era's tolerances, and the 8-bit pixelated graphics, G would be a reasonable rating).

Sound: 8-bit sound effects typical of the 1980's gaming era, and 8-bit adaptations of scores from the anime series as background music.

Game Development Strategy: Inspired by the open source game project, 'Journey to the centre of Hawkthorne', a game made entirely by fans who faithfully recreated a game appearing in an episode of TV series, Community.

Shokugeki No 8-bit will take a page from this approach - leaving its development entirely open source and following the 'gift-economy' approach, as a social experiment exploring the practical implications and viability of this business model.

Existing solely on fan contribution, seeks to excise investor control(pronounced 'meddling', such as the need for monetization, or changing materials to remain kosher). Game content being user-generated would theoretically allow new levels and content can be extended as new chapters in the manga are released. Relying solely on user-moderation also places trust - particularly of die-hard purist fans, who will accept/reject additions by consensus of what is/is-not canon, therefore creating an organic form of quality control.
