A submission for Weekly Music 2017 43

Downtempo glitchy thing again. I'm focusing on getting better at mixing lately so having a new song to mix every week is helpful. I feel like the mid highs are kind of kind of grating here, but my room isn't optimized yet, so I can't be sure.

I wanted to make a generative patch on the modular so I could set it up and let it play while kids answer the door.

What I realized pretty quickly is that I don't have enough modulation options in my modular to quite get the effect I wanted. I still hope that the result is sufficiently spooky or haunting without annoying the hell out of us at home.

Sun, Oct 29.

I'd like to make a generative Halloween patch so I can play it when kids end up ringing the doorbell.

Another busy week, including a show using one of my Max/MSP patches, so here's a little dark ambient track making use of the same patch and similar improvisational methods. (The original input is just a sine wave, going through ring mods, pitch shifters, and delays, all of which have some level of randomization.) As a slightly different approach, I also put on a drum rack of Analog-synthesized drums. Bit of convolution reverb, delay, and Full Chain Master as well...and you have this steady-state kind of thing. My younger son suggested the title, because it sounded to him like something malfunctioning. (It does!)

It's been awhile since I've submitted anything for this streak, but I'll be back soon enough. Been sidetracked with Inktober and trying to reset my brain to work on music. Put together this little beat for a short video I'm going to make of pumpkins with some of my "art" painted on them.
I really wanted a sample from Halloween to scratch over this, but can't seem to find the particular clip online anywhere. The line about believing the boogeyman being real. Anyone familiar with that one or am I just totally imagining that line?
