Submissions from 2017-03-06 to 2017-03-13 (11 total)

late submission cause I lost track of time preparing for our show on Saturday that I forgot to record a track this week. This piece was composed using the raw data from a image file. I clipped out some glitchy parts and created a washy rhythm. Then I added some beats over it from a kit I created out of vocals and radio static.

Pretty much what the title says. Similar to what I made last week.

Took this week's submission back to my jazz roots. Overall I'm really happy with this song other than my scratching, which need some work (I haven't practiced scratching in about a year). So other than tweaking/re-recording the scratching I'd say I've got a complete song here.

For this track I used the following:
- Logic Pro (DAW/various VST/FX)
- Alto Sax
- Traktor on my laptop for the scratching

Can you guess where this week's sample comes from? It should be pretty easy for fans of the show...

All in the box--drum racks, Impulse, Electric, Tension...and a lot of Auto-Filter wah on a lot--including a delay send channel with auto-filter on the front. (I'd recorded bass for this, but ended up replacing it with Tension Clavinet when the key changed.) It started as a dub thing, but got funkier, and I ended up applying wah to a lot of it. Busy week, so not a lot of time to devote to tracking, but I did spend some time in the evenings making variations to the drum line.

Didn't get a chance to work on music much this week, so this is kind of thrown together. It's bad. Don't listen to it.

just fucking around with my tiny eurorack setup this week. all sounds from the modular except for my dumb singing.

OH

A submission for Weekly Music 2017 10

Surdu here: I'm pretty proud of this little diddy I threw together tonight. Very little looping, sequencing, or warping. I just laid everything down one by one. This bass sound is a keeper.

Other than my Ohs, all sounds were made from scratch in massive and performed on my MPD18.

As a side note, it's been interesting to watch all the less committed streakers fall off the boat in the last few weeks. We're down to 14 people at this point. Mad respect for everyone that comes out and posts every week. We are the strong!

----------------

edit: I listened to this for literally hours yesterday and I decided the original submission was too compressed and the low end was a little muddled so I made a few minor changes to improve the mix.

A day of asteroid mining.

This is kind of not in line with the rules since I continued a track that I started last week, but it's really rare that I'll take a track and actually spend a good deal of time on it so I wanted to actually post it and be happy and not worry about composing something else for this week on the cheap on Sunday. (I'll probably start something - I want to do a remix).

I did a song over six years ago. The beginning sucked but it had a catchy melody close to the end that I never finished.

I've always wanted to redo the song. Now I have a chance.

The song was kind of a goofy song based on space asteroid drilling. The theme still fits (space is awesome) and I've also been playing FTL so this totally jives.

Mon. Mar 6 21:40 - 23:00.

In a massive WeeklyBeats faux pas, I'm continuing a song that I started last week, but hey, it's WeeklyMusic, not WeeklyBeats, and I'd like to do things that'll help me enhance my music quality. I rarely revisit songs, so it's a good opportunity to really build the ideas up.

To work on: smoothing transitions and cleaning up some of the chops and production in the fast part. There are too many themes going on in the piece and it doesn't tie together, so I need to make it more coherent.

Tue. Mar 7 21:30 - 23:30. Fixing melodies and some mixing and bad timres. More transition smoothing needed.

What I think is cool: I still like the old melody, but it takes such a back seat. I like the punchiness when the kick drums come in in the fast part.

Spent 30 minutes just mixing also. I don't think I've spent this much time with a track in years. Probably will give this the multiple-monitors-and-headphones treatment if I have time this week.

Wed. March 8 22:20 - 22:40. Going to do a few touch-ups since I did something else tonight instead of music.

* Make the kick punchier in the middle

* Repeat the melody in the A part

* Make the ending more melodic

Thurs. March 9 20:00 - 20:40. Trying to put in some more finishing touches on parts of the melody that I don't like (I can't believe that a melody can cause so many changes) and mixing/production.

Fri. March 10, 20:30ish - 21:40. Finishing touches - lowering volume of kicks, bouncing hardware synth parts, touching volume levels, etc. I think this is done.

This week: 5h 30m

Total for this track: 10h 20m

reversed - little cuts and resonator moskow
